Before you come

What happens at a first consultation

The first visit is an assessment, not a decision. It starts with how the problem began: how long the symptoms have been there, whether there is bleeding, pain or a lump, how your bowels have been, and what has already been tried.

That is followed by a clinical examination — including proctoscopy where the symptoms are anorectal — and, where it is needed, investigation. Ultrasound, CT and endoscopy each answer different questions, and only the ones that will change the plan are requested. If you already have films or reports, bring them: a repeat scan is an avoidable cost.

You will leave with a diagnosis explained in plain language, the options set out including the non-surgical ones, and a plan. Surgery is discussed only where it is clinically indicated, and nothing is decided in the same breath as it is proposed.

For severe abdominal pain, heavy rectal bleeding, a hernia that has become hard and painful, or sudden difficulty breathing, go to the nearest emergency department rather than waiting for an appointment.
