Surgery for Diseases of the Airways in Peshawar

Narrowing or obstruction of the windpipe is uncommon but urgent, and it is often mistaken for asthma for months. Dr. Muhibullah Dawar performs bronchoscopy, tracheal resection and management of airway strictures.

Key takeaways: Diseases of the Airways

  • Often treated as asthma first — Noisy breathing and breathlessness from a narrowed trachea are regularly diagnosed as asthma and treated with inhalers that do nothing. Breathlessness that does not respond to asthma treatment deserves a look at the airway itself.
  • Signs of airway narrowing — Noisy or wheezy breathing, particularly on breathing in.
  • Assessed and performed at Advance Surgery Clinic, Dabgari Garden, Peshawar.

What does airway surgery involve?

The trachea is the tube carrying air from the voice box to the lungs. It can narrow after prolonged intubation or a tracheostomy, from tuberculosis or other infection, from external compression by a large goitre or a mass, or from a tumor growing within it. The symptoms are noisy breathing, breathlessness on exertion, and a cough.

Bronchoscopy is both the main diagnostic tool and often the first treatment — the airway can be inspected, a biopsy taken, and an obstructing lesion cleared or a narrowed segment dilated through the scope. Where the stricture is short and well defined, the definitive treatment is resecting that segment and rejoining the healthy ends.

Assessed before any treatment is recommended.

Signs of airway narrowing

  • Noisy or wheezy breathing, particularly on breathing in
  • Breathlessness that has not responded to asthma treatment
  • A persistent cough with no clear cause
  • Symptoms that began after a period on a ventilator or after a tracheostomy
  • Coughing up blood
  • A large neck swelling with breathing difficulty

An early assessment is what keeps the options open.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

The questions patients ask most often before booking this procedure.

Most commonly scarring after prolonged intubation or a tracheostomy. Infection including tuberculosis, external compression by a goitre or mass, and tumors are the other causes.

Because the symptoms overlap — noisy breathing and breathlessness. The difference is that airway narrowing does not respond to inhalers, which is the clue worth acting on.

It is done under sedation or general anesthesia. Most patients go home the same day or the next.

Where the narrowed segment is short and well defined, resecting it and rejoining the ends is usually definitive. Longer strictures may need repeated dilatation or stenting.

Medical disclaimer

This page describes a procedure in general terms so patients know what to expect. It is not medical advice and cannot replace an examination. Whether a procedure suits you, and what your recovery looks like, depends on your diagnosis, imaging, general health and how you respond to treatment — which is why every plan is made in consultation.

If you have severe abdominal pain, heavy rectal bleeding, a hernia that has become hard and painful, or sudden difficulty breathing, seek urgent care rather than waiting for an appointment.
